My painting is about the lives lost on the brutal journey to the Caribbean from Africa during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Some enslaved Africans resisted slavery by actually throwing themselves overboard and drowning. Others were thrown overboard by slave owners. The African names in the water reflect how enslaved Africans were stripped of their identity and culture.
